The Pumpkin Spice Must Flow! Another Starbucks #PSL Look With Reviews of the New MAC Studio Fix 24-HR Concealer, Patrick Starrr Boy About Town Kit, and More

Pumpkin Spice ERRRTHANG

I’m wearing another pumpkin spice latte look today! (More reviews on the key makeup products, all the new things from MAC that are out right now, in just a sec.) But first, my latest Starbucks adventure…

YUM

Like I mentioned yesterday, for years I thought the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte was limited to the standard-issue #PSL, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. If you look around, you can find TONS of different versions of the PSL (even healthy-ish ones)! If you’re not into the super sweet OG latte (which, I admit, can be a little much, even for my sweet tooth sometimes), you’ve gotta try this other version from The Macrobarista, which I got earlier today.

YUM!

This healthier version of the PSL is spicy and pumpkin-y like the O.G. version, but it’s less sugary. I got mine without the whipped cream, and it was still sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. Comforting perfection in a coffee cup!

No joke, I could’ve downed at least three of them, but Tabs, the world (and I) are not properly equipped to handle a hyper-caffeinated K-Dawg. So I just stuck to one, ha ha!

Oh, and if you were wondering, that intense red matte lippie on my lips did not budge one bit as I slammed this.

I took this pic after I was done guzzling.

Which leads me to these thoughts on ‘ze MAC I’m wearing in today’s PSL-inspired look…

MAC Patrick Starr Boy About Town Kit ($42.50)

mac patrick starrr boy about town kit
This two-piece LE Kit includes the Overpacked Palette and #pattypout lipstick.

Nothing says “It’s PSL season” like an ultra matte red liquid lippie, and MAC has one of the best liquid lipstick lines out there with their Retro Mattes. They’re long lasting and super concentrated, with creamy color that won’t budge, no matter how many times you kiss your tabby throughout the day (this is my go-to shade from the line). The #pattypout Retro Matte red in Patrick Starr’s newest LE MAC collab is all of those things, and it has some deep, unexpected burgundy tones — like crushed red cherries — that grab your attention.

The quad… Not the easiest to blend. I swirled my blending brush on my lids like a human Ninja Blender, and yet the three mattes kept skipping. The glittery bronze is challenging, too, because the pieces like to fly all over the place.

MAC Studio Fix 24-HR Smooth Wear Concealer ($22)

I’m wearing MAC’s newest full-coverage, oil-free liquid concealer in this look as both a face foundation and an under-eye concealer, and it’s REALLY good — so good that it just might have converted me back into an under-eye concealer girl again… Maybe.

If you wanted that hyper-perfected, even-toned skin back in the day, your best option in MAC was Pro-Longwear Concealer, and it’s still available, but it isn’t the most user friendly in the world. The pump is tricky, you have to blend quickly because it dries fast, and if you accidentally apply too much, you end up with cake face. Plus, it tends to oxidize, so you have to compensate by going a shade or two down… Sh*t is complicated, yo.

This new 24-HR one has the pigment intensity and full coverage of Pro-Longwear, but it’s so much easier to use on so many levels. There’s no drama with blending at all (I use fingers or a synthetic blending brush dampened with a little MAC Fix+), and it kinda fills out pores, too, so your skin looks really smooth.

Bottom line: This full-coverage, long-lasting yet natural-looking concealer comes in a nice range of shades that stay true to color on the skin (no oxidizing!). Definitely a go, but FYI, you may have to adjust to a shade or two darker than your typical MAC color, since the 24-HR concealers run slightly darker than I expected them to. I usually wear Studio Fix Foundation NC42 on my face, and when I wear 24-HR as a foundation, I go with NC43, because the NC42 is too light.

MAC Studio Fix Sculpt and Shape Contour Palette in Medium Dark/Dark ($39.50)

GIRL. Soft Focus! It’s the name of the yellowish highlighter in this six-pan palette of face powders for bronzing, contouring and highlighting. As a brow bone highlight, it’s perfection, and the key is the sheen. When I blend a little just beneath the highest point of my arch, it subtly reflects the light to make my brows look lifted and higher and my eyes look more open. And unlike your typical frosty highlighter, Soft Focus does this without blinding whomever’s staring at ya.

Huda Beauty Emerald Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

  • By

Emerald

Huda Beauty Emerald Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette ($27.00 for 0.35 oz.) has a mix of warmer and cooler-toned greens across three matte shades and six shimmers. With the undertones in the palette, the bottom row doesn’t quite jive with the top six shades as cohesively as it could, and I think they could have put in a deeper, matte green for greater contrast (what I felt I was missing when I was trying to use the palette) instead of shade #9 at the very least. The texture of the shimmery shades is denser and thicker, more silicone-heavy, whereas the mattes were thin and drier (not as velvety as past mattes in their Obsessions palettes), so it’s key to apply the mattes earlier on as they don’t layer as well on top of the shimmery shades.

Emerald #1

Emerald #1 is a bright, chartreuse green with strong, warm undertones paired with a glittery, metallic finish. It had good pigmentation with a denser, creamier texture that was best applied with a stiff, synthetic brush pressed and pushed onto the lid or a dampened brush for a really intense, brightening effect. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Emerald #2

Emerald #2 is a mint green with very subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color coverage was semi-opaque and buildable, but the consistency was on the chalky side–a bit dry and dusty and prone to sheering out without a base underneath it. The color stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Emerald #3

Emerald #3 is a medium green with warmer undertones and a metallic finish. It had rich color payoff in a single layer with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was a bit dense and thicker than the typical powder eyeshadow–more emollient as a result, too–and worked best with a flat, synthetic brush and pressed and pushed onto the lid (no sweeping to deposit!). The eyeshadow lasted well for eight and a half hours on me.

Emerald #4 is a deep, forest green with subtle, warm brown undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was denser, which did make it a bit harder to diffuse and blend out on my skin, especially against the matte shades in the palette, which were thinner. It was creamier by touch, so if I worked with it using a fingertip or a dampened brush, it was easier to apply and smooth out. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Emerald #5 is a medium teal with subtle, cool undertones and a sparkling, frosted finish. It had good color coverage, though not opaque, that could be built up to full coverage with a second layer. It had a creamier consistency, which made the base seem less pigmented and the product seem more heavily shimmered. It applied best in pressing motions for greater, more even coverage. This shade stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me.

Hourglass Unlocked Ambient Lighting Edit Palette Review & Swatches

  • By
  • September 25, 2018

Unlocked

Hourglass Unlocked Ambient Lighting Edit Palette ($80.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that features two Ambient Lighting Powders, one Ambient Lighting Bronzer, two Ambient Lighting Blushes, and one Metallic Strobe Lighting Powder. The upside to this year’s palette (in a way) is that the included shades are new rather than repeated from the permanent range. The palette contains $10.51 worth of Ambient Lighting Powder, $5.13 worth of Ambient Lighting Bronzer, $20.27 worth of Ambient Lighting Blush, and $9.50 worth of Metallic Strobe Lighting Powder for a total value of $45.41. I’m not sure why the Hourglass Ambient Lighting palettes are priced so much over the “value” in the palette (as usually palettes offer more value than purchasing alone).

I’d actually love to see Hourglass bring back trios for the holidays–maybe two or three (at least one for lighter skin, one for deeper skin) rather than attempting a one-size-fits-few kind of palette. I am not fair (I’d classify myself as light-medium) but found that the second Ambient Lighting Powder darkened my complexion noticeably if used all-over, so it was more suitable as a bronzer on me, so I found that it was a palette that seemed most suitable for medium to medium deep skin tones.

Soft Light

Soft Light is a light beige with warm, golden undertones and a soft matte finish–there was a dusting of pearl that gave it a lift but not enough to make it read shimmery on my skin. In the swatch, I’ve packed it on in the left portion to try and show the powder’s color as it does diffuse well into my actual skin tone (my arm being light to light-medium) as it was sheer (as intended!). Dusted all-over my face, the powder softened the appearance of pores and skin texture to give a soft matte finish that didn’t look dry or flat. It seemed to add a smidgen of overall warmth as well. I like using powders like this as they’re intended–finishing powders–to add back some luminosity after setting with a more matte powder or on days when I’m indoors and don’t need a full-on setting powder for longevity. It didn’t inhibit the wear of my base products and did seem to help prevent shine coming through for an extra hour or so.

Filtered Light

Filtered Light is a soft, light brown with warm, yellow undertones and a satin sheen. It had medium coverage–far more than anticipated given it’s part of the Ambient Lighting Powder range–which resulted in a more noticeable deepening on my skin tone when I used this all-over. The powder would be more suitable for medium and deeper complexions for all-over application but would work to add warmth on lighter skin tones like a subtle bronzer. It had a smooth, silky consistency that was a smidgen powdery in the pan, but it did not appear dry or dusty applied to my skin. It did smooth out my skin’s texture and give me a more “poreless” appearance. As a finishing powder, it did not disrupt the longevity of my base, and I’d say it did extend the wear by an hour or so.

Golden Bronze Light

Golden Bronze Light is a medium brown with warm undertones and a golden sheen. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, silky texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firm in the pan, so it was blendable and easy to work with on my skin. The bronzer applied evenly to bare skin and yielded a soft, natural finish. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably. (The downside is that the formula is supposed to be buildable, and this shade was quite pigmented.)

Nude Glow

Nude Glow is a light-medium, pinky-peach with warm undertones and flecks of gold micro-sparkle. The blush was rather pigmented when it was supposed to be buildable… which is doable with a light touch or a less-dense brush; that technique often works with most pigmented products, though. The blush had a soft, slightly dusty texture in the pan, but it was smooth and blendable on my cheeks. It yielded a golden sheen that was more apparent than I expected. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Formula Overview

$35.00/0.15 oz. – $233.33 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have “depth and dimension” unlike traditional blush, be “lightweight and airy,” and have the “perfect balance of pigment and powder.” Hourglass says it uses “an advanced ‘miscelare’ technique,” which means to mix in Italian (per Sephora) and is how the marbled effect is achieved. The blush is also supposed to have “buildable color.” It does bring to mind the concept of a lot of baked formulas on the market, but I think the texture is softer and more finely-milled than most.

The texture is very soft and delicate; it feels exactly like the Ambient Lighting Powders. In an all-over powder, I don’t mind what can sometimes veer on powderiness, but in a blush, it can be easy to overload color onto the blush and then onto the skin. I wish it was slightly firmer or less powdery, which would minimize waste and make it more foolproof to apply. If you are really fair, I highly recommend using a light hand, perhaps a stippling brush, and feel out the process–a regular blush brush might prove dense and pack on too much color. I used Tom Ford’s Cheek Blush Brush to apply, which worked well, because I’m of a medium complexion, but I also used a lighter hand initially and found it applied a good amount of color from the get-go.

The blush applied evenly, blended out easily along the edges, and stayed on well for eight hours.

Champagne Strobe Light

Champagne Strobe Light is a light-medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. It had medium coverage in a single layer with a moderate shine that was smooth and reflective without emphasizing my skin’s natural texture. The powder was soft, silky, and blendable without being too dusty in the pan. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Formula Overview

The brand described the formula as “formulated with intensely concentrated, multifaceted pearl particles” to give “the most reflective glow.” It’s supposed to have a “velvety texture.” These seem to be an intensified version of the brand’s Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders, but this formula is not presently available individually. The Metallic variation has a lot more pearl and is aptly described as “metallic.”

The powders had a soft, lightly dusty texture in the pan, but they blended out nicely on the skin and were definitely high-shine, intense highlighters on the skin (both dry and damp). They were fairly pigmented with coverage ranging from medium, buildable to full depending on the shade and whether it was used dry or damp with damp application always yielded more coverage and a shinier finish. The highlighters wore well for seven and a half to eight hours on me.

How To Tell If You Have Cool Or Warm Skin Undertones

  • By
  • September 25, 2018

Hi everyone, Knowing the undertone of our skin can play an important role in helping us choose the most flattering shades of makeup, clothing and jewellery. In this post, I will tell you some quick and easy ways in which you can determine the undertone of your skin. Skin undertones can broadly be classified as warm, cool and neutral. Let’s take a look at some easy ways to find out whether you have warm or cool skin undertones.

How To determine skin undertone

1. Check the colour of your veins: This is one of the most common and the quickest ways to find out the undertone of your skin. Check the colour of your veins on the inside of your wrist. If the veins appear more greenish (than blue) in colour, then you have a warm undertone, while if they appear more bluish (than green), then you have a cool undertone to your skin.

2. Gold vs. silver jewellery: Another easy to find out the undertone of your skin is to try out pieces of gold and silver jewellery one after the other. If you find that gold-toned jewellery flatters you more and blends better with your skin tone, then you’re likely to be a warm-toned complexion. If silver jewellery looks better on you, then you are a cool toned complexion.

3. The neutral colour test: There are many types of colours in the neutral segment, and identifying which family of neutrals looks best on you will help you figure out the undertone of your skin. If you look better in stark whites and blacks, then you’re probably cool toned, whereas if tans and browns are your type of neutrals, then you’re probably warm toned in complexion.

Warm undertones

4. Colours of clothing: Those with cool toned skin look better in jewel-toned colours of clothing like blues, purples and emerald greens, whereas those with warm toned skin look better in more earthy tones like red, orange, yellow and olive green.

5. White sheet of paper test: Hold a plain white sheet of paper against your arm. If your skin appears yellowish against the white sheet, then you have a warm undertone to your skin. If the skin appears more pinkish in hue, then you have a cool undertone to your skin.

6. Burning vs. tanning: The effects that the sun has on your skin can help you determine the undertone of your skin. For instance, if you tend to get sunburn-like effects on your skin when you spend too much time in the sun, then you’re likely to be cool toned. Those who tend to get tanned when out in the sun are more likely to be warm toned in complexion.

7. The colour of your eyes and hair: Finally, checking the colour of your hair and eyes can help determine the undertone of your skin. Those with cool toned skin tend to have blue, grey or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair with silvery tones. Those with warm undertones tend to have brown, amber or hazel eyes with deep brown or chocolate black hair with a golden hue.

Ariel

Colour Pop Ariel Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark, peachy coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that glided across my lips with ease and didn’t emphasize my lip lines. It wore well for four and a half hours and was lightly hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

$7.00/0.12 oz. – $58.33 Per Ounce

The formula that is supposed to be a “creamy-matte” that “glides on like butter, doesn’t feather or bleed, and lasts so long you’ll forget you’re even wearing it.” The majority of the shades were quite pigmented with full color payoff in a single stroke with a few in the more semi-opaque coverage range.

The texture was, on average, smooth, lightly creamy, and not too thick or too thin, so there was no tugging during application but the color didn’t feel slippery while worn, which made them easier to apply straight from the tube and low-maintenance on the lips.

They tend to dry and wear down to a soft matte finish within one to three hours of wear, and while they are very lightweight on, they hug the lips more as they become more matte (compared to initial feel). The wear time has been between four and six hours for most shades, and most shades were non-drying to lightly hydrating. They were vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

Belle

Colour Pop Belle Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium, rosy plum with warm undertones and a cream finish. The lipstick had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which adhered evenly and smoothly across my lips. It was lightly creamy with some slip initially, and there was a smidgen of product that gathered in my deeper lip lines, though it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. The lipstick stayed on well for five hours and was lightly moisturizing.

Cinderella

Colour Pop Cinderella Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright, medium cotton candy pink with cool, bluish undertones and a satin finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, but the texture was more prone to separating along my lip lines, even though there wasn’t anything notable about the feel of it going on that stood out. It was lightly creamy but not overly emollient, so it didn’t drag on my lips nor did it slide around while worn. It lasted well for five hours and was lightly hydrating over time.
